Birth Control Q & A
Who needs birth control?
As you learn more about your birth control options, keep in mind that the word “sex” can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Sex includes vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse, oral sex, or other forms of intimacy and touching.
Oasis Women's Wellness Center helps you define sex and take control of your sex life with your habits and preferences. Your birth control options depend on how often you have sexual intercourse and the type and frequency of sexual interactions.
What should I consider when selecting a birth control method?
Choosing the right type of birth control involves many considerations. These include:
- Which type is safest for your health
- What you can use correctly and consistently
- What you and your partner(s) are comfortable using
- What is affordable and easy for you to access
Oasis Women's Wellness Center can help you evaluate these questions when making a decision about birth control.
What types of birth control are available?
Birth control isn’t one-size-fits-all. Oasis Women's Wellness Center helps you understand the pros and cons of each type. The major birth control options include:
Hormonal contraception
Hormonal contraception includes birth control pills, Ortho Evra patch, vaginal ring (NuvaRing®), and the shot (Depo-Provera).
Non-hormonal contraception
This category includes condoms (both male and female), diaphragm, FemCap, and “natural” family planning or “rhythm” methods.
Long-acting reversible contraception
Implants, such as IUDs (Mirena®, Skyla®, Liletta®, and PARAGARD®), and Nexplanon® implant, can last for three to 10 years, depending on the method.
Oasis Women's Wellness Center gynecologists oversee insertion of IUDs (in the uterus) and Nexplanon (in the arm) as well as removal when you decide you no longer want the implants or when their effectiveness has expired.
Permanent contraception or tubal ligation for women are also options if you’re certain your family is complete.
Emergency contraception is also available at Oasis Women's Wellness Center. You can use emergency contraception up to 120 hours after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. Emergency contraception is not intended as a replacement for regular birth control.
