Pelvic Pain Q & A

What is pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain is a relatively common symptom that can come from a very wide range of conditions. Some of those conditions stem from the female reproductive system, as it is in the pelvis. There are other organs and tissues in the area, too, like the pelvic floor muscles, bladder, kidneys, and appendix. Pelvic pain can originate in them too.

If you experience pelvic pain, you should come in for a diagnostic evaluation at Oasis Women’s Wellness Center. Some of the many causes of pelvic pain aren’t serious, but for those that are, you want an early diagnosis. The team helps you find a treatment for relief based on the underlying cause of your pelvic pain.

While many cases of pelvic pain are short-lived and may even go away rapidly on their own, others can become a long-term issue. Chronic pelvic pain is pain that lasts for six months or longer and does not improve with treatment.

What causes pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain is not a gender-specific symptom as both men and women can experience it from a variety of different causes.

Both men and women can get urinary tract infections, kidney stones, appendicitis, and even sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), resulting in pain in the lower portion of the abdomen.

In women, pelvic pain often comes from the reproductive or urinary organs and needs gynecologic care. The team at Oasis Women’s Wellness Center considers many possible causes, including:

  • Ovulation
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Fibroids
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Endometriosis
  • Pregnancy
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Miscarriage

Along with pelvic pain, you might get a few other symptoms. Telling them to your provider can help them find out what’s causing your pelvic pain, though they perform a pelvic examination and some possible other tests too, like ultrasound.

Pelvic pain can come with abnormal bleeding, bloating, or constipation, among other symptoms.

How can I manage my pelvic pain?

Many different treatments can ease or resolve pelvic pain resulting from conditions of the uterus, ovaries, and other parts of the female reproductive system.

The team at Oasis Women’s Wellness Center considers all of your options and chooses treatments based on the exact cause of your pelvic pain and how severe it is.

Your treatment for pelvic pain may involve:

  • Oral contraceptives to regulate hormones
  • Antibiotics to get rid of an infection
  • Anti-inflammatory medications to relieve inflammation
  • Relaxation exercises to ease muscle tension
  • Surgery to correct structural issues or blockages
  • Physical therapy

The team at Oasis Women’s Wellness Center may ask that you come back in for a follow-up visit as you undergo treatment for pelvic pain. They make sure you’re happy with the results and check to see if you need any further care.

If you experience persistent pelvic pain and aren’t sure of the cause, schedule an evaluation over the phone or online at Oasis Women’s Wellness Center today.
